Extended Project- Research

Research of the horror film and the affect this may have on society?
Films that I have researched:
Taxi Driver- 'One of the most disturbing aspects of the horror genre, other than perhaps the fear of widespread and uncontrollable viral or bacteriological plague infecting and killing all of mankind, would be the popularization of serial killers. Both inspired by and inspiring real-life killers (John Hinkley was inspired by the character Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver), movie serial killers come across as "all-powerful, unpredictable, and, above all, sources of hideous violence" whose approach to their fellow humans is "loathsome" (Freeland 180)'  and "She just goes a little mad sometimes. We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven't you?"
                                                                                                             --Norman Bates,
Psycho "I just can't take no pleasure in killing. There's just some things you gotta do. Don't mean you have to like it."
                                                                                                               --Drayton Sawyer,
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre   http://www.jademyst.com/essays/10.html

Childs Play 3 Even the judge at the Bulger trial made mention of the bad influence of horror movies. Neil did not rent esoteric or particularly brutal movies. Jon loved the karate movies, and wished he could be like Rocky. He drew scenes from the Halloween films. But it was Neil’s January 18, 1993 rental, “Child’s Play 3” that called attention to the video/violence connection. In “Child’s Play 3,” the soul of a serial killer inhabits a doll named “Chucky”. The evil doll, about the size of James, runs around slaughtering hapless victims. But in the end, he is killed in a haunted roller coaster/train ride. A battle ensues on the tracks, and Chucky, who is eventually dismembered, has blue paint splattered on his face from an earlier scene. Although there is no proof that Jon saw the entire film, there are some coincidences. The little child-doll as bad guy, who the heroes destroy in the end. Perhaps it took this cinematic image to invert James into the bad boy, the one who has to die. Jon fantasised about being a hero, the good guy. But he was too scared to take on anyone other than a baby. Link : http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/notorious_murders/young/bulger/8.html

Extended Project- Feedback & changes.

Today I recieved feedback for my idea, I was told that it looks like a manageable and interesting project and to speak to my film teacher about the topic and ask if there are good journal's and websites to look at. Also to try and talk to film companies (via email) and cinemas eg Corner house manchester to get good data to support my argument in the project. After thinking about it ive decided that I would like to change my initial idea, however still focusing on the film industy. My new idea is to carry out an investigation on how the films can reflect on an audience and their behaviour in society. Also why the media pin point certain films as being harmful to society.

Extended Project- Chosen Idea.

I have decided to choose the topic of 'The impacts of piracy in the film industry' as I am very interested to find out how the film industry are affected by piracy, not just focusing on the conglomerate but independent film studios too. This will give an insight of what the future may be like for the film industry if piracy is continued. I will also look at how its carried out.

Extended Project- A plan of ideas

Today I began thinking about a range of ideas that I could investigate for my extended project, my first instinct was the film industry therefore i expanded on this subject and thought of these ideas:

  • The effects films may have on people in society?
  • The impacts of piracy in the film industry.
  • The impact film and games can have on society?
